Experience

2020 - Present

Freelance Proofreader and Editor

Fiverr

I have been a freelance editor and proofreader on Fiverr since June 2020. I have maintained a 5-star average in over 200 reviews,  became a Level 2 seller in May 2021, became a Fiverr Pro Verified Seller in September 2021, and a Top Rated Seller in May 2023.

One of the most exciting projects I've worked on to date was editing a speech for Andrew Sears, the President of City Vision University (Kansas City, Missouri), to give to prospective students.

In September 2021, I became the exclusive editor for Sedona Ashe's books, an Amazon International bestselling author. Her work has since been translated into two other languages

2017 - 2021

Assistant Freelance Editor

Michael Sangster

(Freelance Editor for Cactus Communications)

Knysna, South Africa

This job was a saving grace for me at a time when I needed it the most. It was essentially a paid internship. My main role was to observe and learn more about the editing process in a professional and academic setting to assist in my future endeavors as a freelance editor myself. Michael was a mentor to me, and I can attribute a lot of what I have learned about academic editing to him.

2018 - 2021

Video Captioner and Transcriber

Rev

I worked for Rev as a video captioner and transcriber, which entailed transcribing text from a video and then embedding that text to the video itself as a caption.

Rev requires its workers to maintain an exceptionally high standard of work, so there was no room for spelling or grammatical errors; everything had to be perfectly and professionally done. All our work was graded and I maintained a perfect 5/5/5 rating.

The most exciting project I worked on with Rev was when I wrote the captions for a full-length feature documentary about the history of John DeLorean and the famous DeLorean car.

2019

Volunteer Teaching Assistant

Epilepsy

Knysna, South Africa

I worked as a volunteer for Epilepsy for approximately 6 months. My role was to assist with teaching the residents that were physically and cognitively impaired, by helping them learn colours, shapes, counting, basic reading, and drawing. I also did outdoor activities with them to promote muscle co-ordination and dexterity, as well as teaching them songs and dances as morale boosters.

The highlight of working with Epilepsy was when we celebrated Mandela Day by going around to various schools in the area (Sivuyele School for the Deaf and Little Angels School for Children with Special Needs) to play with them and perform our songs and dances for the children.

2015 - 2017

E-mail Marketing Assistant

Silva Oaks Marketing and Advertising

I worked as an e-mail marketer during my time at university to help fund my studies. My role here included sending bulk marketing

e-mails, office administration, as well as assisting with marketing design, advert proofreading, and customer feedback.

Knysna, South Africa

2011

Assistant Proofreader

Action Ads

Knysna, South Africa

I worked for Action Ads during my 11th grade year, learning valuable information about the world of publishing and printing. My role was to screen the classifieds for spelling and grammatical errors, as well as assisting with the printing and collating of the weekly classifieds paper to prepare them for distribution.

Education

2015 - 2018

University of South Africa (UNISA)

Bachelors of Arts (Health Sciences & Social Services) in Psychological Counselling

During my time at UNISA I received 11 distinctions, and was awarded a Mayoral Bursary from the Knysna Municipality based on merit  to fund my final year of study.

2018

South African Writers College (SAWC)

Certificate in Copy-editing and Proofreading

I completed a six-month course in Copy-editing and Proofreading, and received a certificate on completion.

I learned how to do developmental editing, line editing, as well as manual editing on paper using proofreaders' marks.

2020

British-sign.co.uk

Certificate in Basic British Sign Language

During the first hard lockdown of the 2020 coronavirus pandemic, I sought to broaden my horizons by learning something new, even if it wouldn't advance my career.

I decided to take a course on the basics of British Sign Language, and was awarded a certificate on completion.

2023

South African Writers College (SAWC)

Certificate in Mastering Punctuation

I completed a six-month course in Mastering Punctuation, and received a certificate on completion.

During the course of this study, I was delighted to learn that the results I'd achieved in my assignments were the highest they'd seen to date for the course (99%), earning me a distinction.

2023

South African Writers College (SAWC)

Certificate: Grammar for Writers

I completed a six-month course called Grammar for Writers. This course really helped me hone my skills as an editor, and motivated me to start writing my own novel. The lessons I learned were absolutely invaluable, and I attribute a large part of my career success thus far to this course. I received a distinction for my work.
